Over the weekend Spotify pushed an update to the beta channel of its Android app, adding support for Android’s Material You icons. Making it one of the first major apps to support the new feature, along with Reddit, Whatsapp, Signal, and more.

Spotify’s Material You icon

Spotify’s Material You icon is a simple mask of its original green and black icon. The background of the icon, when in dark mode is a dark colour, while the Spotify logo itself is light. When in light mode, the colours are flipped to ensure there is enough contrast between the colours.

Spotfiy’s new themed icon will likely be pushed to the public version of the app in the coming weeks.

It’s great to see the number of large developers supporting Material You icons continuing to increase. The biggest challenge Google faces with this new feature is getting support from developers, but it doesn’t seem to as a big of an issue as we first thought.

We can’t wait to see more large and small developers support Android’s new theming feature and are excited for the day when all our icons are themed perfectly with each other. As for bringing in Material You theming into Android apps, we don’t except many developers to take this on so soon due to more in-depth nature of the project and will likely result in varying degrees of Material You added to each individual app.
